-== Kenny Ken : Gravity Saturday 14 March 1997 ==-

DJ's :- Kenny Ken(UK), BJam, Jay, Greg Packer, Echoic, QBall
Well what a night..great to see one of the masters at work...didn't play a brand new set, some trax going back to '94 but who cares, it was a cool one!

-== ALMATRADE : Saturday 22 March 1997 ==-

DJ's :- Greg Packer, Friction, Hutcho, Menis, Stimulator, Kracka, Skeptik, Jacen, Internatty. Live P.A.'s :- Fanatik, Violation, Animal Intelligence.
Ok well it was at the Hellenic Cntr Stirling St again...but some effort had been put in. A lot of good hardcore all night...the crowd was hard to read though, as to what exactly they wanted to hear. Respect out to fellow P.A's. Violation for a wicked set and Animal Intelligence for the Darkcore!
PS Guyz - where's my @#$* crew shirt???!

-== FUSION : Good Friday 28 March 1997 ==-

DJ's :- DJ Stompy (UK), Kenny-L, Mr.Whippy, Hutcho, Rob Fender, Sample, Greg Packer, Flex, Zig Zag, Kevin, Havoc.
NB :- DJ Unity played instead of DJ Stompy..not sure why he wasn't there...no announcement was made.
The Embassy Ballroom...a nice big venue, but very empty when not full.
Well what a shame, it had potential to kick, but where were you people? The music was nice and hard, nice lights and the storm bursting directly overhead at 3am was wild...(except the power went out!).
I think people got the nights mixed up here.

-== AUTUMN SHOWER : Saturday 29 March 1997 ==-

DJ's :- DJ Carl Cox, Will-E-Tell (Melb.), Rhys Evans, Mr.Whippy, Dan The Man, Shmoo, Miggy, Dave Jackson, Rudy, Milly, Big Daddy, Nelson.
Hmmm we got there late - so I can't honestly comment on the earlier DJ's myself, although people I talked to there, told me Will-E-Tell was crap, which surprised me as usually he plays a good set. The setup was good and the pre-fab chillout room was well done...different idea.
Carl Cox played what can only be described as a repetitive, souless and effortless set which over the course of 4 hours, bored most of the crowd who were well up for a harder-edged or at least more inspiring set. I spent most of the night catching up with mates I hadn't seen for a while...there must have been 2000 odd people there...so they had the numbers, but not the atmosphere good music brings. A classic example of how hype can build a DJ's reputation far further than they live up to. Jeff Mills, Mark E-G, Colin Favor etc would have gone through the roof here.
One for the minimalistic Trance and House crews only...what more can I say, except how many turned up expecting hardcore or uplifting tunes and went away disappointed?? Shame...a night when the local DJ's kicked over the "International/Interstate guests".

-== DJ Aphrodite - Gravity : 12 April 1997 ==-

DJ's :- Greg Packer, Style, Brian G, Zig Zag, Sample, Splink-E, Menis, Internatty.
Brought to you by Universal Vision and Light,Sound,Dance Productions.
One of the UK's well known Jungle producers...I didn't make it there myself, but from what i understand, once it was moved from Gravity to the Stirling St. Hellenic Centre people did not support it well at all. It seems at least for the time being, that venue is unusable if you want a crowd. Shame...to me the music is the most important factor in a night out...obviously some people don't think the same.

-== Liquid - 19 April 1997 ==-

DJ's :- [Psychedelic trance, goa, trance and acid]
Puff, Jayd, Yogi, Myssi, Spanky, The Cat, Gerrad, Ondy
In the Chill Out Zone :- [Ambience and Trance] Christian, Andrew, Sampson, Nikki
Venue :- 45 Murray St, Cnr. Irwin St Perth.
Didn't make this one either (well i can't be everywhere at once!). A big thanks to maz for his comments.
"A good night although police shut it down at 4am because from outside you could see in the male toilets, about 1 out of every 9 people went to the toilet the rest where too busy popping. It had fresh fruit drinks & free nangs, more people would have made the night better."

-== Back To The Underground (Part II) : Fri 25 April 1997 ==-

DJ's :- Daz Willot, Zig Zag, Brian G, Greg Packer, Hutcho, plus special guests.
Brought to you by Universal Vision...a night of Old School Anthems and Underground toons.
Once again the Charles was rocked with the Old School...not so many people this time...where were you all ?

Masters of Hardcore Volume I
-== Slipmatt - Gravity : 26 April 1997 ==-

DJ's :- Greg Packer, Kevin, Leroy, Corruption, Freestyle.
Well it turned out a wicked night...Slipmatt playing an Old School set (very similar to his U.Dance Compliation mix) - the place went bezerk. What a shame someone had to pinch the tape...SOMEONE has got it...anyone with any info please phone Raggabone, even anonymously.

-== House Of Decadence : Sat 3 May 1997 ==-

DJ's :- Daz Willott, Sonic, Dirty Den, Rob Johnson, JJ, Chase, Zero Cool, Glen Mason, Mage, A.K.
Billed as Perth's first all night house event...but about three years late...never mind. Well I think the advertising lacked on this one..shame nice setup...but you could count the people on one hand.
NB I haven't made the flyer clickable here, cos its only a photocopy & the quality isn't worth it.

-== Entropy II - The Second Coming : 10 May 1997 ==-

Ultrasonic (Live) and MC/DJ Ribbs(UK)
DJ's :- Daz Willott, Kriece, Zig Zag, Hutcho & Kevin (Back2Back), Merrick, Brian Gee, Mr.T.
DJ's scratched from bill :- Paul Holden, Greg Packer and Switch.
Well what a night...the biggest crowd at a hardcore event for a while (also the largest door queue!). Everyone and they're dog turned up for this one and why not? With Ultrasonicgoing crazy to the crowd (& the crowd going crazy at the dancing girls!) and the late inclusion of MC/DJ Ribbs on the mic & the decks, it was a recipe for a big night. All this coupled with a friendly atmosphere and the crowd being up for it. Although there was some great music played, my one criticism of the night was the order of play...the music going up/down/up/down every set...with no continuity to the vibe - many people commented to me about this. Personally I'd say that also there was too much house played at what was billed as a hardcore rave. Ribb's Mc'ing went down a treat, but his purist techno set left the venue a little empty, shame. Best sets of the night :- Daz Willot, Brian Gee...wicked old school set.

Masters of Hardcore Volume II
-== DJ Sy - Gravity : 17th then 19th May 1997 ==-

DJ's :- Kevin, Greg Packer, Menis, Corruption, Leroy
Postponed till monday night after someone messed up his travel plans!
Corruption, DJ Kev & Greg Packer played a nice warm up set for the man...and at 1am he dropped the needle on his first track. A good set, hampered by the equipment though and it showed. Unlike most though he was very professional and played like the crowd was 2000 strong (DJ Sy I've always regarded as a nice down-to-earth guy). Nice to have the "scratchmaster" return once more to Gravity but only to a small crowd after the weekend was so packed (approx 50-60 people?) but also to a knackered crossfader and poor muffled sound...was a shame.

Masters of Hardcore Volume III
-== Lenny Dee - Gravity : 30 May 1997 ==-

At last Perth gets what the rest of Australia's been treated to 4 times before.
Dutchy & Kev (back2back) played a wicked 3 hr build up set to Andrew Meredith's deep trance, to be followed by the man - DJ Lenny Dee...well what can you say...he caned the crowd with a punishing hardcore set for 2 hours...and then some! Big suck eggs to all who didn't turn up, instead believing the stupid rumour that Lenny was gonna play House - you missed out!! He was head-banging and jumping round to the music (and what a nice down-2-earth guy!) I had to follow him - what a hard task!! I decided to play some older style Gabba (if anyone was wondering, the first half an hour of stuff was a little tribute by me to Lenny) from '92 -'93. Leroy finished up the night with a solid set of Happy Hardcore.
Photos Soon!

United Nation
-== House Showcase - Embassy Ballroom : 1 June 1997 ==-

DJ's :- Big Mac, Lilly, Miggy, Gully, Milly, Curlee, Hubba, Dave Jackson.
Well after a long night of drinking, we finally made it down the ballroom (with me in the boot!). After getting hassled by the nazi bouncers, we got in ok to a very nice setup. Good to see everyone who has used this venue so far has bothered to make a different setup each time. Hubba was on when we got there and Miggy followed him with a very Chemical Brothers style set. Not really my sort of thing, the hardcore crew sought safety in numbers at the back with beer! for a house event though it was ok.

--==*==--

"Catatonic"
-== Trance Event - 179 High St Fremantle : 6 June 1997 ==-

DJ's :- Puff, Rewind, Twitch, Quake, Muse, Bartman, Ondy, Gyro.
Don't know much about this one...underground events are sometimes better mysterious anyhow. Once again...didn't make it...anyone wanna offer a revue?

--==*==--

Dream Sequence
Cancelled & Postponed
-== Hardcore Event - 82 Beaufort St : 7 June 1997 ==-

DJ's :- Kevin, Dutchy, D'Sire, Style, Internatty, Menis, Sniper, Impakt, Izrael, Freestyle.
Another one by LSD Productions, this party offered to recreate the party atmosphere of years gone by, although to be fair I don't think most of the promoters round these days were there when they were happening. No offence meant! Apparently the venue was booked last minute (or so the stories went) and we waited on the street with everyone else, but to no avail - shame.

-== Trance Night - 158 William St (Basement) : 14 June 1997 ==-

Hmm..ah well i didn't make it after all...someone wanna contibute a revue??

Closed down
-== Hardcore Event - shed in East Perth : 21 June 1997 ==-

Well with the same advertised line-up as previously mentioned, this party was set to go with the second date and the third venue...but once again to no avail....This one got closed down apparently...we couldn't find it and spent 30 minutes driving round the East Perth Train Station area. Never mind guys...maybe next time???

-== Helter Skelter 4,5,6th July ==-

Venues : Fri - Gravity, Sat - Embassy Ballroom, Sun - Club Atlantis.
Well did YOU last the 3 nights of mayhem...???
Friday night...with Hixxy + Supreme @ Gravity was not well supported, but then again with such a big event of the Saturday, you'd think those who said they couldn't afford the rave would've come here.
Note: It was also DJ/MC Kev's & Rob Fender's birthday...so if you were there you know now why we were running amok so much!!
Saturday night...the main event....well what can I say - if you were there you more than likely had a wicked time...if not...shame of you for missing this one, it went off!! DJ Kev kicked off the night (after we [Fanatik] nearly blew the sound system during the soundcheck!), followed by Rob Fender. DJ Herb(Syd.) dropped a more bangin set which led up nicely to the P.A. by Fanatik...which seemed to go down well...and just in case you're wondering, we did get it on D.A.T - tape out soon!(plug! plug!). Scorpio played a solid set in his own distinctive style - Techno to Gabba, followed by Greg Packer who broke up the night with a hard jungle set which surprisingly these days, went off well. Up next stepped the man like Supreme, supported by Ramos(with the champagne in hand!) who played a different set of more Trance-style stompers & Supreme hit the mic. Brisk finished off the marathon set from the UK artists. Dave '3D' Ward, Kenny L & Supreme finished up the night with a mixture of stuff off D.A.T and vinyl...although I thought Dave Ward's speech a little egotistical & unessessary. All this, as well as a House/Trance arena with Pee Wee Ferris, Nik the Fish & some local guyz. Highlights of the night...the balloons thrown around over the crowd, when Rob Fender tore down the Helter Skelter logos, the free crew beer & the lovely ladies in there! Pheew!!
Sunday...comedown at Club Atlantis w/ Pee Wee Ferris, Nik the Fish etc.
This was a VERY big weekend...ouch my head!!

-== The MadHatters Ball - Gravity Sat 19th July 1997 ==-

DJ's :- [In DC's] Big Mac, Steve Mason, Dirty Den, G-Styles, Lilly, Cody & MC Plum
[In Gravity] B-Jam, Corruption, Kevin, Rosko, Echoic, Leroy, Q-Ball
Ok well I didn't end up getting to this, instead going to Krush for DJ Switch's (Inertia) last night before leaving for Sydney. Apparently Raggabone saw sense and adjusted the lineup to a more hardcore 4x4 order. I spoke to a few people who said the night was good and so was the crowd...I wonder if anyone went as Bogans and didn't get in like half the Vermin Crew last year?? hehe

--==*==--

-== Hard Boiled II - Gravity Sat August 9th 1997] ==-

DJ's :- EasyGroove(UK), Greg Packer, Hutcho, Rob Fender, Havoc, Brian Gee and the Vermin Crew back2back - D'Sire, Dutchy & Kev, with a live P.A. by Fanatik...the first in Gravity!
Oh boy what a weekend(ouch my poor head!). Well it was the usual chaotic hardcore night of mayhem once again in Gravity. Funny how it rained the same as the first event! A good mix of music played by all DJ's added to an already class atmosphere crowd. The Perth party-goers once again proving that they party hard with the best of them! Brian Gee and Leroy kicked off the night with good sets of Old School and Stomp. Havoc & Rob Fender hit the crowd with Gabba and Trance-core. The Vermin Crew mixed up the Stomp & Happy Hardcore back2back, followed by Fanatik doing a live set. Shouts out to Kev for whipping up the crowd for us. Easygroove played a wicked mix of three styles in one set, Trance/Acid, Jungle and Happy Hardcore/Stomp. Greg Packer dropped a set of classic Breaks & then I played some more Breaks mixed with a bit of old stompers. Easygroove returned to the decks at 5am and played some classic rave anthems, unfortunately being turned off at 6am. A great night & vibe, the sets from Rob Fender and Greg Packer being my favourites.

-== Utopia : 16/08/97 ==-

Location :- Cracovia Soccer Club, Beechboro. $10 entry.
DJ's :- Hutcho, Kev, Rob Fender, Greg Packer(replaced by Finesse), Mr.Tickle, Seb, Leif, Simon, with P.A. by "Blackout".
On one of the coldest nights I can remember, it was a shame this got shut down as I dropped my third track at 3:40am. It was wicked and a bit shout out to Clockwork Productions for a first-class effort on both the venue and lighting. For a first party these guyz went to a lot of trouble...maybe a few organisers should look at parties like these and learn from them. The Laser & intelligent lighting, as well as a projection screen was well used on stage to entertain the masses. Also hopefully it will signal that Perth ravers will get off their backsides and travel to a party if they want new locations.

--==*==--

-== Alice in Wasteland : 16/08/97 ==-

I haven't got many details about this...ta to Karl for bringing it to my attention though. I had a B+W flyer...but can't find it in all my mess...apologies to those guyz!! Bit shout to Funky Danny Gee for answering the call of a review. "It was supposed to be held 7km outside of Fremantle,on Cockburn Road, but at the last moment the venue was changed to Victoria Hall near the centre of Fremantle. The crowd gathered slowly at first and it was a reasonably small venue but by early morning the place was really cranking..it ended up being a pretty good night."

--==*==--

-== DJ SS & MC Warren G : [August 22nd] ==-

Location :- Gravity Nightclub, 9pm till late
DJ SS, the man behind Formation Records in the UK, didn't dissapoint a good crowd with a solid set of Drum & Bass. Too many rewinds though (eg four for a mad Ed Rush dubplate) got on my nerves quite a bit though. Greg Packer to me played the best set of the locals, with Echoic, Rosko etc following up the night. Also no disrespect to James, but who told Warren Gee that Echoic was Perth's & Australia's Junglist Number 1? Hmm...

--==*==--

-== Acid Test : [August 23rd] ==-

Location :- 298 Hay Street Subiaco, 10pm till late
DJ's :- Puff, Mr.Whippy, with live P.A. by the CSU Sound System.
I didn't make it to this as I had other commitments...Kev went though and said is was quite good...with Puff and Whippy playing decent harder techno sets. Anyone want to add a comment?

--==*==--

[Thumbnail]
-== Captivate (Free Party) : [August 29th] ==-

Location :- Hellenic Centre 75 Stirling St, 8pm till late.
Ok this was a free event...and all ages, which don't come along very often.
DJ's :- Greg Packer, Kevin & Hutcho(Back2Back), Izrael, NVS, Internatty, plus some new Perth talent - Dusta, Skeptic, Rod Munoz. Also features P.A's by Violation & Animal Intelligence.
Ok well these guyz went to a bit of effort to put on a free event for all...unfortunately a few people decided to spoil it all. Big disrespect to the absolute idiot who busted the toilet windows and gave the cops reason to enter the venue...why do you think venues stop hiring themselves to raves when this sort of thing happens...whoever you are I hope you're proud of yourself. It was a good night of music, however I will state again that a P.A. set should be 30 to 45 mins maximum and only when the set contains more than one style of music. No disrespect to Violation or Animal Intelligence, who both played great sets...but they were on for too long for the unforgiving Perth audience, who soon bored of their sets. Shame people...with everything thrown on for free all you had to do was party hard...but how many of you chose to be wall-flowers and sit down most of the night??? Nice sets by Greg packer & Dusta also.

-== Mrs.Wood : [Fri September 5th] ==-

Location :- Jackal Nightclub 230 William St Northbridge.
DJ's :- Mrs.Wood(UK), Miggy, Kenny L, Flex, Gully, Pinto.
"I find the Jackal rarely holds a good crowd all night and is usually infested with seedy patrons. Although the night did not last the distance it seemed a more friendly, inviting crowd infested the Jackal. As for the Lady herself she played a remarkable set, playing the likes of "Green Velvet" and other high class Techno tracks. Miggy also played a wicked set (like usual), but I wasn't to sure about the others like Pinto playing commercial crap like DJ Supreme-Wild Style, I mean guys its a TECHNO night not a Leederville night. But all up the night was one to remember."
I have to agree with those sentiments, as for why Pinto was on the lineup at all I don't know...surely its a bit of a contradiction of terms placing a mainstream DJ on an underground bill.
Big thanks to Swanky Sunshine for the review.

-== White : [Sat September 6th] ==-

Location :- Greenwich Bar under His Majesty's Theatre.
DJ's :- Kriece, Mr.Whippy, Miggy, Nelson. Not much info on this one, the flyer is plain white...different. Well I was going to go and review it, but got too caught up watching Diana's funeral on tv. Contributed review welcome!

--==*==--

[Thumbnail]
-== The Future Sound of Drum & Bass : [Fri September 12th] ==-

Location :- Gravity Nightclub, Northbridge.
DJ Ellis Dee & MC Fearless (UK), with support from QBall, Rosko, Echoic, BJam & Finesse.
Well the club wasn't too packed, but the crowd was well up for it. Ellis dee's first half hour was mad, I thought the rest of his set lost it a little...but he played a far more varied than DJ SS.
MC Fearless was cool on the mic...but without Greg Packer the lineup was lacking bigtime an experienced jungle DJ....and it showed.

--==*==--

[Thumbnail]
-== Gravity Special Event : [Sat September 13th] ==-

Location :- Gravity Nightclub, Northbridge.
Hmm...what a surprise...we were involved with another booze up!! Good night, but I must admit the crowd didn't seem to be consistent in its desired music direction for the night.
DJ's :- Rob Fender, Kevin, Leroy, Hutcho, D'Sire etc...

--==*==--

[Thumbnail]
-== EMAS Presents Mercury : [Sat September 13th] ==-

Location :- City Farm, 184 Brown St. East Perth (opp.Claisebrook Station).
DJ's:- Jayd, Justin, Mr.Whippy, Mumbles, Ondy(sorry man!), Schmoo, Squidgy, Stealth.
Live P.A.'s by :- C.S.U & Jase from Outta Space & Guest.
Spoke to a few people who went and they said while they were there, the music was bizarre Thrash/Industrial and the place was full of skaters etc. Hmmmm well anyone else fot an opinion on this one. Also heard it got closed early.

--==*==--

[Thumbnail]
-== Atlantis : [Wed September 17th] ==-

Location :- Krush Nightclub, James Street Perth.
A free house night with a watery theme...10pm till late
DJ's :- Kriece, Big Mac, Capt.Fantastic
Not much info on this one...but it was free entry...info anyone??

-== Plastik : [Fri September 19th] ==-

Location :- Planet Nightclub 329 Charles St, North Perth.
DJ's :- Ritchie Ritch (Melbourne), Mr.Whippy, Miggy, Troy, Puff and live sets from CJ Bolland & C.S.U.
Ok well I did get to this after all...Ritchie Rich played a wicked set before CSU's live PA which was experimental to say the least...perhaps too much so, but nice 'n hard at the start - these guys really are good at what they do...live Trance...check em out sometime. Ritchie Rich then came on again, which was strange as he came on instead of CJ Bolland at 2.15am, playing a rather badly styled set of trip hop etc which mellowed instead of building the crowd for CJ, who was billed for two hours performance. When he finally DID come on stage he was on for on hour. The highlight for me being a very '97 mix of "Horsepower". I missed him when he was first here 4th November 92, as i was at James St watching Grooverider rip it up on tha dex. Whippy & Puff as usual didn't dissapoint with good sets of Trance/Acid etc. A good night overall. Also those red psychedelic eye-glasses were wild!

--==*==--

[Thumbnail]
-== Helter Skelter II [Sun 28th September] ==-

From the UK - UFO, Ramos & Supreme return & Slam(instead of Force & Styles)
Local DJ's :- Greg Packer, Kevin, Rob Fender, Kenny L and Fanatik performing a live P.A.
With one of the best venues used in Perth, this party lacked the people to fill it, (but lets face it the venue could hold 3,000+ easily) but those that went, went off.
Whippy & Puff were a no-show. Kriece kicked off the night nicely for 1.5 hours with a good set of Trip Hop/Trance & House, followed by Ramos going on at 10:30 for a Trance/Hard House set, unusual for an international to be on so early. NU23 did a good Trancey/Ambient style set - but unfortunately were on at the wrong time, with the music going from hardcore to them back to hardcore. Rob Fender was on next and turned up the volume on a wicked Trancecore/Stomp set...only to suffer from distortion. DJ Kevin was more lucky with his set going off without a mishap, but someone had a laugh with him on the main monitor - big time! Ramos hit the decks again for a Trancey/Stomp style set, followed by Greg Packer, playing one of the best sets I've heard him play for a while...old school mixed VERY quickly, one classic into another. The Fanatik P.A. went off well I think, thanks Perth for the crowd support! We were followed by Supreme who played a set of Happy Hard style, then Slam who hit with some classic 94 breaks etc. UFO's morning set was wicked...shame more people didn't stick around, with Kenny playing the last 45mins.
Well there was no Live RSR Showcase...which was a shame...but lots of new UK dubplates played. Personally I think this event was too expensive for DJ's some of whom have been here four times before. Overall though? A wicked night.

-== Religion [Sun 28th September] ==-

Right well this was obviously the place for the House crew while all the ravers are out elsewhere. 10pm - 7am Embassy Ballroom, Carlisle.
From the UK - Darren.S (Cream & Renaissance), with Pee Wee Ferris, Darren Briais, Flex, Miggy, Mr.Whippy, Gully & Pinto.
Ok well by all reports the house crew didn't support this event...apparently only approx 150 or so payers turning up. Beats me why promoters should have to put on events on for a section of the scene who obviously won't bother attending locations other than clubs...I mean crikey people - don't you get sick of the same club venue week in week out???

-== Hardcore Heaven : [Fri October 3rd 1997] ==-

Location :- Gravity Nightclub, 10pm till late
A Vermin Crew & Teknology Corps Special Event...since the Jungle crew have got Saturday...the hardcore was Friday night.
With DJ's :- Greg Packer, Kevin, Rob Fender, Hutcho, Leroy and Dutchy.
Well I must say we were well chuffed with the turnout for this one...considering the only advertising was a few posters in the club the week before and a small mention in X-Press...ta Perth! Good sets from all contributed to a good night & atmosphere. Nice to see so many people stay till the close...apologies I couldn't play one more...that was a management descision...NOT mine!

-== Doof party : [Fri October 3rd 1997] ==-

Location :- Victoria Hall, 10pm till late
Main Room :- Squidjy, Christian, Choice, Spak, Sam the Tipi Man, Jase from Outa Space & Lumukanda from Melbourne live. Chill out Room :- Tob.E1, Sam & Bradidge, CSU(live), Deredjeff(live).
Reviews please?

-== Mickey Finn : [Sat October 4th 1997] ==-

Location :- Gravity Nightclub, 8pm till late
About time the man himself came here...his set of 'Jump-Up' was perfectly mixed..you couldn't fault him on that, but I've heard him play a far more varied set than this...which seemed to drag on a bit, especially when his set was extended. Personally Greg Packer's set kicked far more, the darkside keeping the crowd there till late. One question...why does the crowd thin out so much during International Jungle DJ's sets at Gravity? Surely if you pay to see a DJ it's worth staying there for their set instead of wandering into DC's???

--==*==--

[Thumbnail]
-== Ministry Of Sound Australian Tour: [Sat October 11th 1997] ==-

Location :- Planet Nightclub, 9pm till late
DJ's :- Frankie Foncett & DJ Heaven(UK), Miggy, Dave Jackson, Puff, Mr.Whippy, Rudy, Nelson
DJ Squidgy(Melb.), Rodin & UV from CSU do the Ambient room.
Apparently it sold out in advance...I didn't get to go, as I played the last set at Gravity, but Kev said that DJ heaven played (& had!) a very nice set, playing good uplifting House, with a few older tunes, whereas Frankie Foncett didn't mix it up too well and stuck with a more Garage tip. It took over 25 minutes to move between the two floors, so from what I understand they sold far more tickets than the venue is licensed for. When we were outside at 6am, there were large crowds hanging around. Any other contributions?

-== Dr.S.Gachet : [Fri October 24th 1997] ==-

Location :- Gravity Nightclub, 105 Francis Street, Northbridge
DJ's :- Dr.S.Gachet(UK), Echoic, QBall, BJam, Mental, Size
Good to see Mental & Size got a well-deserved spot...no Greg Packer again though, which is silly. Missed this one...big birthday dinner for me. However, I got told by Kev that he mixed up a few styles - Jazzy, Jump-Up and Darkside etc. Good to see, not many international Jungle DJ's go across the spectrum that far.
This from DJ Dart - "this was when he first delivered a dose of 'remember the roller' to the Perth crowd...without a doubt his best tune from his label Audio Maze. The joint went absolutely crazy and it was the first time (and pretty much one of the only times) i have ever been totally up for a rewind. It was the only song in my hazy knowledge of the whole set that got rewound and he played this dub version where the intro went for at least a couple of minutes whilst mc ??? (not sure who) just got the crowd jumpin til the bass dropped and the place went crazy..for my money.. the best gig i have ever been too, only when he came again the next year did i even come close to enjoying a party as much as that one".

-== Hardcore Birthday Bash II : [Sat October 25th 1997] ==-

Location :- Gravity Nightclub, 105 Francis Street, Northbridge 9pm - late
DJ's :- Greg Packer, Kev, Hutcho, Rob Fender, Leeroy, FreeStyle & guests
The once-yearly chaos of Dave's, Steve's and my own birthday combined for a night of quality hardcore and the usual lashings of beer...I didn't outdo last year's effort...if you were there then...you'll now why!!! Strangely enough everyone else was worse off than me...(especially Kev & Rob Fender!!) no matter how many shooters you guyz got me...just one of those nights when you can take it I guess. Thanks out to all who went for making my birthday and my set, one of the most memorable for me...respect to you all!

-== Acid Test 2: [Sat November 1st 1997] ==-

Location :- Dance Studio, Central Perth
DJ's :- Luke Slater(UK), Will-E-Tell(Melb.), Mr.Whippy, Puff.
What a good venue this was...tucked away...nice little setup...the sprung floor was a problem for the DJ's though...as the decks kept jumping. As I got there Mr.Whippy was playing and then Puff both playing good sets of Trance...Whippy's hard-edge I liked more on the night though. We were there from 12 - 2:15am - and didn't want to leave but had to return to Gravity for Kev to play. This contribution :-
"Luke Slater was the man, playing an inspiring hard techno set sending the crowd balistic. His style was of excellent quality dropping 'Land of the Lost' by Green velvet (the third Green Velvet track played that night) but mostly sticking to his driving techno style, but suprised everyone for his last five minutes by playing a big beats track. Will-E-Tell's house dipped in techno style rocked the crowd to the signs of daylight shone upon us.Puff and Whippy were up next going back to back with Will-E-Tell both playing the usual 'rock'n'roll' by Daft Punk and 'Destination Unkown' by green velvet." - Swanky Sunshine
And then this :- "It was damn hot and the decks kept on jumpin when he (Luke Slater) got to the hard thumpin acid, I noticed how he quickly switched to some trance after he gave up on compensating for the jumps." - Chris B.

-== Hard Boiled III : [November 8th 1997] ==-

Location :- Gravity Nightclub, 8pm till late
DJ's :- Rob Fender, Kenny L, Havoc, with Back2Back sets from Hutcho & Kevin, Sense & Mental, Big Mac(replacing Darren Briais stuck over East) & Greg Packer(old school set), Mr.Whippy & Puff and D'sire & Dutchy. Are you ready once again to party till you drop?? Just goes to prove you don't have to pay a fortune to get value for money! Oh and by the way...the chick's name on the flyer is Carmen Electra host of MTV in the States....< phew!! >
Well what a night...the record crowd for Gravity (only beaten by two international nights), some guy falling through the roof onto the dancefloor, the bar being re-stocked surpassing our usual benchmark standards and great sets from everyone only added to the class atmosphere. Respect out to all who came and made the night what it was...a HUGE success....keep an eye out for number 5!!! Photos soon.
Note : Tapes will be released from this night.

-== Millenium [8th November 1997] ==-

Location :- 228 Oxford Street, Leederville, 7pm till late.
DJ's :- Mage Corruption, Freestyle, Spectrum, Internatty & Amnesia, Nuttyspin, Effects, Gyro with a live P.A. by DJ Daemon.
The same night as "Hard Boiled III" unfortunately - so I didn't get down there. From what I heard there were not many people there about 1am...anyone wanna contribute some observations?? According to another review on Hypnosis's site...there was a bit of a fight and it got shut down as well.

-== Doof - "Mulch" : [November 15th 1997] ==-

DJ's :- DJ Choice, Ondy, Jayde, Christian, Sam the Tipi Man, Tractor, Squidjy. With live percussion jams by Deredjeff and Moustache 750, fire dancing, and lots of other stuff. The City Farm hosted the event once more. It featured harder tunes from goa to acid inside (where the line-up seemed to vary a lot from planning!) & the 'anything goes' chill outside in the gardens. Approx 450 people turned up apparently, Stuart(east coast) filling in for a missing Tobe-1 and a good night had by all...

-== Trade 97 World Club Tour [Wed 19 November 1997]==-

DJ's :- Malcolm Duffy, Steve Thomas, Brett Nickisson (UK) & Dirty Den (Perth).
Not much info on this one...even X-Press was a bit vague, but we turned up after the Leederville to queue with the masses. A $20 door charge was a bit rich on a Wednesday, but there you go. DC's was not 100% packed, but the music was quite good the time I was there till 2am. As per usual no-one knew who was DJ'ing anyway...after we who knows what it was like?

DJ's :- DJ Lee Burridge (UK), Chad D, Mr.Whippy, Dave Jackson, Miggy, Kriece.
Spiral Promotions present this UK-themed club night at Krush James St, for this over 18's event.
This contribution from Chris B :- "It was a good night, Well, i have no idea who DJ Lee Burridge was, but I certainly was not dissapointed. Even though it wasn't the typical house event, the choons were hard and pleasently fastish. Krush was at its usual busy state, and fortuntely not packed..."

-== "pH1.0" [Sat November 22nd 1997] ==-

DJ's :- Mr.Whippy, Ondy, Puff, Muse, Twitch, Micha, Dr.Claw, Twiggs, Shaunee.
Ok well this was a FREE party. Cool idea...Perth needs a few more surprise events. Sorry about the quality of the scan but photocopied flyers never turn out that good.
These contributions :- Chris B...On the directions : "turn at the 3rd left?" hah! more like the 6th left.", the party : "a simple small setup, 2 intelligent lasers, 2 scanners, 1 strobe, 1 smoke machine, a lot of trees, a lot of dirt, decks, and low powered speakers"
"There were no major hiccups(apart from people getting lost) and a crowd of about three to four hundred, made for an excellent night!"
Aaron : "When we got there around 2am there was about 150-200 people. I felt that the laser was a bit pointless as the patterns it was making could not be recognised in the bush, and the money could have been spent on a better sound system."

-== Reunion III 88-93 : [Sat November 29th 1997] ==-

Location :- Gravity/DC's Nightclub, 8pm till late
DJ's for Gravity (in order of play):- Size, Hutcho, Echoic, Miggy, Big Mac, Greg Packer.
For DC's (in order of play):- Glen Magor, JJ, Dave Jackson, Darren Briais, Hubba, Jay, Steve Mason.
The setup was good on the night, with staging being added in Gravity with dance cages & dancers - who were bettered by regular punters who took their place when they slacked off. The air-conditioning was stuffed, with rumours of a $25,000 profit over the bars...no wonder. Crikey what a night I don't think any more people could have been squeezed into that venue if you tried. It was good to see so many old faces - pity they don't come out for other events as well. The small sideshow was a good idea and helped create a good vibe outside while people chilled out...from the heat & crowd. That point reminded me a lot of the old days, when you'd wander outside for a while, then back in, then out again & into someones car etc. I didn't venture into DC's at all...from what I heard, the atmosphere lacked that of Gravity & people were moving between the two clubs a lot. Personal complaints :- the sound levels being too low up to Big Mac's set, the crowd I think finding it hard to hear Size's, Echoic's & my sets. MC Plum being billed as sole MC ALL night - only appearing once-in-a-while...leaving Kev, Preacher and Sense to do the work, which they did well. One other query - WHY wasn't the night taped or videoed for posterity - I'm sure I'm not alone in wanting a record of that crowd cheering at the end...I don't think there was a dry eye in the house from the people who remember what that stood for. Respect to Kev for pumping the crowd during my set & at the end of the night.

-== Top Secret 2 : [Sat December 6th 1997] ==-

DJ's :- Schmoo, Rhys Evans, Shamus, Dave Jackson, Andrew Meredith, Emma Love, David O'Riley, Michael Bishop, Grant Davies. Live P.A. by Red Ember productions.
Billed as featuring Trance, Techno and undergound progressive sounds....nice foldout flyer, this party was by DJ Chase of the (old) Ohm Nrg Crew...should be good.
Unfortunately didn't make it after all...someone wanna tell us what it was like????

-== "Vision" : [Sat December 6th 1997] ==-

DJ Vibes (UK) Gravity Nightclub 8pm - late.
DJ's :- Greg Packer, Mr.Whippy, Kenny L, Rob Fender, Kevin & Leroy
The producer of such gems as "Music's So Wonderful"(1993) & the "Ravers Choice" label played Oz for the first time, but as I predicted, the lack of advertising time seemed to affect the crowd size...which wasn't large. To be fair though, where were all the regulars? Greg's Jungle set didn't go down well at all...shame, the crowd being mostly Happy Hardcore purists. Kev came on & at the first sound of a solid bassdrum, the dancefloor was full. Vibes came on (eventually) at 2:35am - rather late...& did a wicked uplifting set, very true to style. You missed out Perth.

-== DJ Vibes : [Sun December 7th 1997] ==-

DJ Vibes (UK) Club Atlantis 9pm - late.
Well after finally getting past the Nazi security...especially the door-chick who redefined the term (even arguing with the Manager as to whether I could get in!)...Vibes played a laidback UK-style House/Club set, which went down quite well with the (surf) crowd. After that we got thrown out of the DJ-area by the security AGAIN, they're the worst I've ever experienced. Ah well.

Legendary DJ Roger Sanchez from the U.S.A. brought to you by Delerium.
DJ's :- Dan the Man, Rudy, Miggy, Dave Jackson, Mr.Whippy, Puff.
Well I got there just after the man himself started...418 being pretty crowded. An extra wall of sound being added, not really any decorations etc...but hey the music is the most vital ingredient right? Sanchez played a rather US House-styled set, doing the typical turn down the bass for a bar, then turn it up again as the tune kicked in after a breakdown etc...which made the crowd go wild...why I don't know as its nothing special and something anyone can do. Don't get me wrong though - his mxing was spot on and he played a good selection of tunes within that spectrum. I couldn't stay to see any of the other DJ's as I had to get back to Gravity.

-== Members Xmas Party : [Thur December 18th 1997] ==-

DJ's :- (In DC's) Big Mac, Lilly, Dirty Den, Steve Mason
DJ's :- (In Gravity) Echoic, Q-Ball, Leroy, Kev, Hutcho, Rob Fender, Dutchy, D'Sire
Free Booze most of the night led to lots of smashed punters according to those who went (and remembered!). DJ Kev apparently wandering the dancefloor aimlessly two tracks into his set! I missed this due to illness...sounded like a large one!

-== Entropy III : [December 20th 1997] ==-

All ages event, Embassy Ballroom - Carlisle 8pm till late.
What a great night...Mr.T warming the crowd up with some nice Jungle, followed by myself leaning towards the Techno/Trancecore tip. Brian Gee's non-appearance allowed Kev the freedom of a 2-hour set and he did not disappoint, playing an excellent set from Jump-Up to Happy to Trancecore. Paul Holden followed with the hardest set I've heard him play for a while (or any Sydney DJ) and FINALLY UltraSonic came on half an hour late...but who noticed?? Their hour show sent the crowd wild and the dancers...well lets just say the front row was mainly guys! Greg Packer then played a varied set of Jungle/Hardcore which paved the way for Daz Willot's Housey sound...which was probably unfortunately lost on the younger crowd. Greg Packer returned for his Old School UK set...some lovely breaks in there, followed by a mix of Mr.T and Brian Gee. All in all a good night. My personal complaint being the owner turning on the heating to sell more drinks on an already hot night...stupid.

-== FUSE : [Sat December 20th 1997] ==-

Gravity Nightclub...no start time given on flyer..but 10pm+ likely.
DJ's :- DJ HMC (two-time Australian DJ of the year), Andrew Meredith & Dave Jackson.
An alternative for the non-hardcore/non-old school fans...three events this night...phew. Ok didn't make this...I stayed at Entropy 3 al night...anyone??

-== Science Fiction : [December 26th 1997] ==-

18+ only, Embassy Ballroom, Carlisle 9pm till late.
DJ's :- Carl Cox & Darren Emerson (UK) Well on what must have been one of the hottest party nights ever, we converged at the Embassy Ballroom with the other multitudes at midnight and lined up to get in. I don't remember raw heat like that on entry since Ohm Nrg II in Dec 91...phew! The owners stupidly ran out of water around midnight, and had to resort to filling up people's bottles etc from the taps to basically stop them from all dropping like flies. God knows what they made on the bar...I never like their $2 tiny plastic cups! The setup was good...nice lighting, clear sound and a marquee out the back for a chillout...which was full most of the night. Nice to catch up with so many old friends again. The music? Well its a shame it wasn't a class as the flyer, Darren Emerson slightly altering the style of minimalistic beats and "Progressive House/Trance", but crikey did it go on and on, the only break being either a fade down in ther track, or a new track coming in...which for some reason got a cheer and whistles from the crowd - why? The DJ did nothing special and neither did the music. Maybe its because they were hoping for something to happen in the mix...which it didn't. It sounded like the same mix CD on all night on repeat. If thats the style of Trance for the future count me out. For my money, the best music I heard from 12 - 5:45am (when I left) was Dave Jackson in the side room playing Jungle. Really my only criticism of the event itself was the lack of an introduction for the DJ's coming on...unless you are in the front row, how are you supposed to know who's playing???

DJ's :- DJ Dance (UK - Fantazia/Helter Skelter), Greg Packer (only Perth NY.Eve set), 303, Kriece(100FM), Hutcho ('92-'93 classics 11:30-12:30am), Kevin, Dutchy, Rob Fender, D'Sire, Havoc, Justin Campbell.
MC's :- Kev, Preacher, Interjecta, I-Rock, Viper, Sense
Well due to a lack of seemingly decent options for seeing in the New Year, we decided to bomb a party of our own! Teknology Corps and the Vermin Crew returned again with the first in this continuing series for over 12 months. Unfortunately due to licensing, it was an 18+ event only...sorry we did try! Well what a night...a big thank you goes out to all who turned up....just short of 900 nutcases through the door. Midnight brought a tear to my eye...the crowd response!!! Everyone ripped up tha decks in true Stingin The Tail style...what a wicked messy night!!! Shout out to CJ who surprised us all but just turning up straight off the plane from Sydney!! 418 rocked...if ya missed it, you REALLY did miss it!!

-== New Year's Eve 97/98 ==-

DJ's :- Sample, Brian Gee, Kev, Hutcho, Zig Zag (back again!), Splink-E
An all-ages event, featuring the Technofear laser, Bubble machines etc the venue Stirling St Hellenic Center. Well the flyer didn't really tell you much...bit messy eh? It had some potential to be quite a good small party...unfortunately while I was there 10 - 11pm, there were about 10 or so dancing and about 20 - 30 sitting around the walls...come on Perth - you can do better N.Y.Eve!!! Anyone offer an all-night revue??

Supposedly a Big Beat night...sounded more like a Disco revival...any info???

-== Tasty : [New Year's Eve 97/98] ==-

DJ's :- Echoic, Jay & Mental, Leroy, Rosco & QBall, Menis, Corruption & Freestyle, Rewind & Finesse.
Location :- Gravity Nightclub.
Well the lineup changed a bit...with myself, Rob Fender, Greg Packer, Kev & Dutchy axed apparently due to not agreeing to play exclusively for them...bit of an old Thomas Von Raeder tactic methinks?? Who said politics were dead in tha Perth club scene? Ah well.
Don't know how it went other than people said it was pretty crowded with a lot of people seeking refuge in there from DC's. Some rumour went round it shut at 2am...but I don't think so. Anyone?
